Since initially rolling out its business tools in May 2016 to a subset of users, Instagram has opened up the ability to convert profiles, adding features that marketers and influencers have taken advantage of for years on Facebook. While the process is easy, many still haven’t made the switch, missing out on:
Insights and Analytics
Optimize your Instagram performance by understanding your best performing content, with the ability to show potential and current partners the value of your content. These metrics include impressions, reach, and engagement for all of your posts, along with clicks to your website and audience demographics.
Extend the reach of your posts to new audiences by quickly promoting them within the app (like Facebook “boosted” posts).
Connecting to Fans Outside Instagram
When you convert to a business profile, your profile page gets additional contact info if you wish to provide it, including website, email, address (or city), or phone number.
If you have over 10,000 followers, you can also add links to your Instagram Stories.
Schedule posts, Track mentions, and more
Having an Instagram Business Profile allows you to integrate third-party solutions that can enhance Instagram’s core solution with features like the ability to schedule content, monitor mentions in comments or tagged photos, and content valuation.
How to Get Started
What You’ll Need
- An Instagram Personal Profile
- A Facebook Business Profile to connect to your Instagram Profile
To begin, click on the gear button at the top of your profile to view your profile settings:
Under Account, look for the option, “Switch to Business Profile.”
Click on this option, then follow the instructions to convert your account.
Instagram will have you scroll through some of the benefits of converting to a Business Profile. Simply select “Continue” to go to the next screen.
You will then connect your Facebook business page to your Instagram page by selecting “Choose Page” and identifying the correct option from the list of pages accessible from your Facebook account.
After connecting your Facebook page, you will be asked to set up your business profile. You will now have the ability add your business email address, telephone number, and physical address. This information will be used for the “Call,” “Email,” and “Directions” buttons you choose to appear at the top of your profile.
Note: You are required to add at least one form of contact information. If you want to preserve your anonymity, skip the email and phone number just add your City in the Address section.
Then select “Done” in the upper right corner, and you’re all set!
Business Profile Features
After you convert your profile, you’ll notice some changes to your Instagram profile page.
In addition to the new buttons for “Call,” “Email,” and “Directions,” the graph button at the top right will allow you to access Instagram analytics for your profile, including:
- Followers gained/lost
- Actions taken on your profile and visits to your profile
- Reach and impressions
- Basic follower demographics (gender breakdown, age range, top cities)
- Analytics on individual posts and stories, such as reach and actions
A “Promote” option will now be visible on your profile page, which allows you to create an ad campaign directly from Instagram.
A “Promote” button will also be visible on posts, allowing you to boost an individual post.
Both options will allow you to choose your campaign goals to create the desired outcomes.
You can then set up your campaign directly from Instagram, including selecting your audience, budget, duration, and payment method.
